Overview

A recently retired professor of history, Patrick Steuben, receives a visit from a former student, Melanie Lange, who asks him to lead her on an imaginary journey into the past. They meet two or three times a week, and during each session he tells a story involving the two of them as they make their way through the challenges of a particular era. However, before long their travels become something more than they've bargained for. Part history, part fiction, Patrick's tales present the reader with questions about the nature of the human character in the 21st century, how the past shaped that character, and the role of imagination in our collective evolutionary journey.
